Travel advice for Sunamganj

  • Haor shutki (Sunamganj): Dried freshwater fish is Sunamganj's main food product: about 2,500 tonnes a year are made across at least 90 villages, from fish such as puti, tengra, baim, shol and gazar, and some is exported. An April 2026 report says the district has no wholesale market yet.
  • Shimul Garden blooms mid-February: The silk-cotton trees flower around mid-February; Tanguar Haor is best in monsoon.
  • Reaching Sunamganj: Buses to Sunamganj leave Dhaka from Sayedabad, Mohakhali and Fakirapool (Ena, Mamun, Shyamoli, Hanif); about 6 hours, fares reported from about Tk 550 (2021) to Tk 800 non-AC (2026). Or take a train to Sylhet and a bus on; a night train to Mohanganj (Tk 200 in 2021) then road or boat also works.
  • Niladri Lake boat rides: Boat rides on Niladri Lake cost about Tk 50-200 depending on time. Agree the price first. The lake is very deep from past quarrying: do not swim unless you are a strong swimmer, and even then stay near the shore.
  • Check road conditions: In Jan 2025 roads to Shimul Garden, Barek Tila, Niladri Lake and Tekerghat were poor or under repair (Tahirpur-Tekerghat in five packages), and Barek Tila and Niladri had no tourist toilets. The Dolura-Balat, Ringku-Bagabari and Shahidabad border haats were not operating.
  • Monsoon floods and river crossings: In July 2026 the district administration warned of flood-like conditions with the Surma, Kushiyara and Jadukata rising, and called haor tourism risky. Crossing the Jadukata costs a few taka by boat. Follow Meteorological Department and Water Development Board warnings and local advice.
