Travel advice for Tanguar Haor
- Haor fish (Tanguar Haor): Tanguar Haor is a major freshwater fishery with some 140 species recorded, including local fish such as taki, shol, gazar and ayer. Daily Star reports say stocks are falling and many species are endangered, so choose fish from the local boatmen and markets and avoid protected species.
- Monsoon for the haor, mid-February for Shimul Garden: The haor is at its best in the monsoon when water merges with the sky; houseboat travel is also best then. The Shimul (silk cotton) garden at Tahirpur blooms around mid-February.
- Monsoon or winter: Monsoon gives the best water scenery; in peak winter about 200 types of migratory birds visit. Check current rules with the Sunamganj administration.
- Bus to Sunamganj, then road or boat to the haor: Buses to Sunamganj (Ena, Mamun, Shyamoli, Hanif) leave Dhaka from Sayedabad, Mohakhali and Fakirapool (non-AC about Tk 800 in 2026), or take a train to Sylhet and a bus on. Boats leave from Sunamganj Sampan Ghat, Tahirpur or Madhyanagar (via Mohanganj by train, then CNG to the ghat).
- Check the current houseboat and core-zone restrictions: In June 2025 houseboats were barred from the watchtower area. On 2-3 Aug 2026 the Sunamganj administration banned houseboats and tourist boats from the haor's Ecologically Critical Area until further notice, with registration required by 10 August; the ban does not name Tekerghat.
- Houseboat prices: Houseboats from Sunamganj/Tahirpur cost about Tk 10,000-12,000 per room for a two-day, one-night trip (Jan 2025). One 2026 trip report paid Tk 5,000 per person for a night with three meals, falling to about Tk 2,000-3,000 on a fuller boat of 13-14 people.
